Placing a Cell Phone Near Your Ear Could be Fatal

LONDON (Reuters) - Using a mobile phone may increase the risk of certain types of brain cancer in humans and consumers should consider ways of reducing their exposure, World Health Organization (WHO) cancer experts said on Tuesday.

A working group of 21 scientists from 14 countries meeting at the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said a review of all the available scientific evidence suggested cell phone use should be classified as "possibly carcinogenic."

Using Your IPad or Playbook May Disrupt Sleeping Habits

My first encounter with technology’s ability to affect sleep happened when I was an intern on my first surgical rotation, which included frequent 24-hour shifts. To allow interns like me to catch a few hours rest, the hospital gave us pagers. I toted the little black plastic box into the call room, flopped down on a cot and closed my eyes. But I couldn’t sleep. Was the pager about to beep? What if I slept through it? The mere presence of the technology induced such anxiety that I couldn’t drift off.

I wasn’t controlling the device; the device was controlling me. Something similar seems to be happening with today’s tablet computers. The portability of Apple’s iPad and Research in Motion’s PlayBook encourages us to take the tablet with us to bed. Many of us have replaced a good book with the iPad as the last media our eyes meet before dark. A U.S. poll released in March by the National Sleep Foundation estimated that 61% of people used some form of computer a few nights a week in the hour before bed. In fact, nearly half of adults in their twenties surfed the Internet every night, or almost every night, within the hour they went to sleep.

All that computer use may be harming our ability to perform the mental switch-off sleep requires — which could make us less productive and more irritable during the day.

Dr. Michael Gradisar is a psychology professor at Australia’s Flinders University and an expert on the sleep effects of interactive media. His research indicates that passive media — classically, books — are good for lulling us to sleep. But Gradisar says more interactive media, such as video games, cellphones or Web-browsing devices, “are more alerting and disrupt the sleep-onset process.”

One of the most comprehensive studies I was able to find about this was a Belgian study published in 2006 in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health. Based on a survey of 2,546 children in Grades 7 and 10, the study investigated media use as a sleep aid and how it related to fatigue. Respondents who said they used as sleep aids such activities as television-watching, computer-gaming and music-listening each reported decreased number of hours of sleep per week and increased self-reported levels of tiredness.

Disturbed sleep patterns may lead to daytime sleepiness, poor school results and behaviour problems for children. Other studies have shown children’s poor sleep patterns can carry over into adulthood. Interestingly, reading books in bed did not negatively affect sleep. “Although the respondents report using television, computer games and music as a sleeping aid,” the researchers noted, “the results suggest that there is no reason to assume that these media are really helping them sleep.”

Several theories attempt to explain how bedroom media use affects sleep patterns. The “displacement” hypothesis suggests that time spent consuming media displaces time spent conducting other activities, such as sleeping. Another theory suggests interactive media creates a state of hyper-arousal and cognitive stimulation just as we’re supposed to be winding down. Dealing with work-related email before bed, or in bed, also can lead to sleep-delaying cognitive stimulation. Finally, lying in bed with a multimedia device can cause such ergonomic challenges as neck and arm strain if the activity is not conducted in a comfortable position.

“Ah,” says the diehard iPad user. “At night, I only use the iPad to read e-books. That’s OK, right?” Maybe not. Darkness is an important component in the circadian rhythm that sees us transition from sleep to wakefulness and back again. That’s because darkness triggers the pineal gland’s production of melatonin, a hormone that suppresses body temperature and heart rate and in general promotes sleep. A growing body of research indicates the sort of light projected from backlit computer screens could be enough to suppress melatonin production, in turn disrupting our natural circadian rhythms.

The effect may be strengthened when the computer display is held as close to the face as iPads and PlayBooks tend to be. For example, a Swiss-German study published in March in the Journal of Applied Physiology established that exposure to light from a backlit LED computer screen prolonged wakefulness even over non-LED screens. (The test was conducted with a Hewlett-Packard screen. Apple’s iPad also has an LED screen.) Interestingly, dedicated e-book readers such as the Kobo or the Kindle, which are not backlit and do not function as light sources, probably wouldn’t create this effect.

I’m not criticizing the use of tablet computers. I think mine is great. Studies have shown the media they store can promote health — from humorous TV shows and clips that help people deal with stress and depression to video games helping children deal with the pain of severe burns. They’ve also been shown to assist in stroke rehabilitation.

But we’re fooling ourselves if we think tablet computers work as sleep aids. The general rule? If you’re serious about your night’s sleep, leave technology outside the bedroom. No TV, no video games, certainly no tablet computer. Instead, protect the bedroom as a sanctuary. Treat it as your space to restore, relax and recharge the old-fashioned way, with soothing bedtime activities, such as a great book, which can ease the body’s transition into a long night of calm and rejuvenating sleep.

India Youth Addicted To Texting

New Delhi, May 18 (IANS) As telecom companies try to outdo each other with attractive and cheap SMS plans offering hundreds of free messages daily, it has transformed the communication patterns of youngsters in India, with 60 percent of those surveyed choosing it as the preferred mode of communication, an industry lobby said Wednesday.

‘Communication patterns of young India’ was conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) between January and April and 2,000 youngsters from 12 to 20 years of age were interviewed in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Patna and others, with Delhi topping the list.

‘Nearly 70 percent of Delhi’s youngsters prefer messaging over other forms of communication like face-to-face conversations, voice calling, social networking, instant messaging and e-mailing, whereas the national figure stands at 60 percent,’ said the survey.

According to the survey, while 70 percent of youngsters in Delhi send and receive between 100 to 125 text messages daily and over 3,000 texts each month while another 15 per cent are texting 75 to 100 messages daily. Around 50 messages are exchanged daily by 10 percent and meagre five percent respondents said that they send around 30 to 40 texts daily.

‘Sending and receiving text messages has become primary means of communication, so much so that excessive texting has become an obsession amongst youngsters,’ D.S. Rawat, Secretary General, ASSOCHAM.

‘But, excessive texting is leading to a number of problems as they are developing problems like insomnia, depression, lack of eating, isolation etc. Besides, according to reports of chamber’s analysis prolonged engagement with such an activity can lead to diseases like brain tumor and infertility,’ added Rawat.

But the youngsters opined that texting was a more secretive form of communication as it can be carried out under the nose of their parents, teachers, guardians and other figures in authority and was an economical option too, said the survey.

Alarmingly, around 60 percent of youngsters admitted that they text while driving, considering it multi-tasking.

‘It’s a disturbing fact as the risk of a car crash increases by 30 times in case of texting while driving, as drivers typically take their eyes off from the road for nearly 5 seconds to send or receive text messages,’ said the survey.

Nearly 90 percent slept with the phone next to them and were suffering from insomnia. A majority of the respondents admitted that they are often awakened by a phone call or a text message after going to bed and the lack of sleep has been affecting their work and progress.

‘Around 80 percent the city said that they check their phones every few seconds to see if they have received any message and due to constant fast typing on the cellphone’s keypad, at times they feel severe pain in area between thumb & wrist which throbs constantly.’

According to the ASSOCHAM analysis, the popularity of text messaging in India has risen dramatically as compared to 2006 when a youngster on an average used to send around 5-10 text messages daily as there were not enough of cheap messaging deals provided by telecom companies. This has risen to almost 125 text messages per day during the course of the last five years.

New documentary spotlights dangers of texting while driving

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Public awareness campaigns turned the tide on drinking and driving, and a major company is hoping to do the same for the epidemic of texting while driving.

A recent study found that texting while driving was more dangerous than driving while intoxicated.

Now, a special documentary should be seen by all people who are still breaking the law, by texting while behind the wheel.

The documentary was produced by communications giant AT&T. It is part of the Company's "It Can Wait" campaign, an effort to try and get wireless users to not text while driving.

It is a powerful documentary that will drive the message home, by featuring stories and individuals whose lives have been altered by texting while driving.

Among those on the documentary is Merry Dye, whose seventeen year old daughter, Mariah West, was texting with her boyfriend, when she ran off the road and hit a concrete bridge.

"I was at work and got a call that there had been a pretty bad accident, so l left to go there," said Mariah's mom, Merry Dye.

Mississippi State Highway Patrol Trooper Grant Hendrix was one of the first on the scene of Mariah's accident and one of the first things he saw in the car was a cap and gown in the back seat. Mariah was scheduled to graduate from high school the following day.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, Mariah suffered major internal injuries and died a short time later.

In the video, Mariah's crash is not the only texting accident featured. There is the story about the young man who hit a bicyclist, another about two sisters texting to each other, and the deadly result.

AT&T is hoping people find the documentary very compelling, and will help convince people that the problem is so severe, they will never text and drive at the same time every again.

In the past ten months since the documentary was released, more than 21,000 consumers have pledged not to text and drive and have posted that message on the AT&T Facebook site. The message is simple, no text is worth losing a life over.

The company is sending out free DVD copies of the documentary, hoping it will be shown at schools, to safety organizations and government agencies across the country, to let everyone know that of all cell phone related tasks, including talking, dialing or reaching for the phone, texting while driving is the most dangerous.

US Teens Send An Average of 3,339 Texts Per Month

According to recent studies carried out by Nielsen, teens from the United States of America text three thousand, three hundred, and thirty nine times a month on average. A few people are likely to be shocked by these figures, but how surprising is it really in this day and age where everything revolves around convenience and technology? Reports suggest that the average American teenager texts at least six times per hour. This is not a surprising figure, and many people actually text a lot more.

How a cell phone picture led to girl's suicide

At age 13, Hope Witsell struggled in middle school. Not because her class work at Shields Middle School in Ruskin, Florida, was challenging, but because Hope was being bullied.

Her friend, Kyla Stich, told CNN that fellow students would "walk up to her and call her 'slut,' 'whore,' and they would sometimes, they would call her 'skank' and just be really cruel to her."

Another friend, Lexi Leber, said, "We had to make like a wall, we had people surrounding her, and she had to be in the middle because people would come by and try to hit her and push her into a locker or something.

"She was afraid to walk alone, she was afraid someone would do something to her, like verbally attack her, so she would always have someone with her," Leber added.

This all started in the spring of 2009 during the last week of school.

Friends and family say Hope had "sexted" a picture of her breasts to her boyfriend. Another girl from school, they say, got her hands on the photo and sent it to students at six different schools in the area.

Before Hope could do anything to stop it, that photo had gone viral.

The school alerted Hope's parents. Her mother, Donna Witsell, told CNN how she learned about the photo.

"The assistant principal had a meeting with my husband and I and pretty much told us that he did not see the image but that he had heard that it was Hope and when he confronted Hope, Hope did not deny it. She wasn't proud of it but she didn't lie," Hope's mother said.

Mrs. Witsell says she had warned her daughter about the dark side of technology, about "some of the pretty sexual images of young girls and guys."

She added, "Hope was very aware of that, of inappropriate dress and most definitely posing."

Still, because of that photo, Hope had become a target for 11-, 12-, and 13-year-old bullies.

But she didn't share her pain with her parents.

Even when bullies wrote horrible things about Hope on a MySpace page called the "Shields Middle School Burn Book" and started a "Hope Hater Page," the young girl kept silent.

Summer provided a bit of a break, but when the new school year began, the taunting was even worse.

On Saturday, September 12, 2009, Hope Witsell helped her father mow the lawn. They cooked a special seafood dinner together as a family. Then Hope disappeared to her room upstairs. Her parents stayed downstairs and watched TV.

Donna Witsell will never forget the moment she went to say goodnight to her daughter.

According to a story in the Chicago Tribune, outgoing 160-character text messages on a cell phone typically costs users 20 cents, while it only costs carriers three-tenths of a cent to process. That's a 6,000% profit.

SMS (short message service) texts are limited to 160 characters because they, in effect, piggyback on a secondary data channel necessary to coordinate voice communications. Even if you're paying 10 cents per text, that's nothing to LOL about.

"Six hundred text messages contain less data than one minute of a phone call," testified Consumers Union policy analyst Joel Kelsey at a hearing before Congress. If text data rates applied, he said, a brief cell conversation would cost customers $120.

On Monday, a 16-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl were found in the yard of Clarence Sansom Junior High, allegedly involved in a sexual act.

They were both there with friends and, according to police, had just met a week earlier on Facebook.

A study from the United States finds that 40 per cent of teenagers are sending lewd messages or nude photos to each other.

One expert says it's increasingly becoming a problem and something needs to be done.

Executive Director of the Centre for Safe and Responsible Internet Use, Nancy Willard, tells The Calgary Sun, kids are oversexed through advertising and entertainment to the point that many think intercourse is normal for their age.

Willard says children are most at risk in middle school and that's when the peer pressure begins.

Teens and tweens always feel they're making good choices but their hormones don't allow them to make the right decisions.

The best way to battle this issue lies with the parents.

Willard says moms and dads need to monitor their children's Internet use. They should be using positive reinforcement and applauding them when they make safe Internet decisions but explaining what's wrong when they don't.

Large Opium Operation Found In British Columbia

A huge number of opium poppy plants have been discovered by police in British Columbia, in what authorities are calling the largest single catch of its kind in Canada.

The plants were found in Chilliwack, a city in a rural area 120 kilometers east of Vancouver.

Chilliwack RCMP drug unit was executing a search warrant on Monday when they discovered a field, seven-acres in size, with 60,000 opium poppies, police said in a statement.

Two men, who were tending the fields at the time of the search, were arrested. Police are recommending the men be charged with production of a controlled substance, and possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance.

The men have been released pending a court date of December 14. Police say the two suspects are not the owners of the property, nor were they known to police.

The investigation into the drug operation and those responsible for it continues.

Although heroin, codeine and morphine can all be refined from the opium poppy, police believe these plants were being grown in order to produce doda - a fine powder often taken with tea or hot water that produces a quick high, followed by a sense of well-being.

According to the RCMP, the use of doda is a new trend in opium consumption that appears to be primarily localized within certain South Asian communities.

A local farmer has been contracted to destroy the poppies.

Twitter Buys Cloudhopper To Bolster Its SMS Service

Twitter Inc. said Friday it was buying a start-up to help it send an increasingly huge number of text messages around the world.

The social networking service is acquiring Seattle-based Cloudhopper, which manages computer systems that allow companies to send billions of text messages around the world, for an undisclosed amount.

Twitter says it has become one of the world's largest originators of so-called SMS messages, creating and sending more than 1 billion text messages every month.

"Twitter was inspired by SMS and we continue to embrace this simple but ubiquitous technology," wrote Kevin Thau, who manages mobile partnerships at Twitter, in a blog post.

Twitter began in 2006, largely to take advantage of the rise of SMS, or short message service — which allowed mobile phone users to send one another short messages of about 140 characters.

But amid rapid growth, Twitter has had problems with site outages and lackluster performance — often because it grew too fast for its underlying technology to handle so much traffic.

Twitter is hoping to ensure that with the Cloudhopper acquisition, its text-messaging ability can handle the weight put on it by tens of millions of new users scattered around the world.

"Cloudhopper will continue to work with us as we invest further in connecting with more carriers and making SMS tweets increasingly useful and innovative," wrote Twitter spokeswoman Carolyn Penner in an e-mail message.

DOT bars commercial drivers from texting at wheel

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Transportation Department said Tuesday it is prohibiting truck and bus drivers from sending text messages on hand-held devices while operating commercial vehicles.

The prohibition, which applies to drivers of interstate buses and trucks over 10,000 pounds, is effective immediately, the department said in a statement. Truck and bus drivers who text while driving commercial vehicles may be subject to civil or criminal penalties of up to $2,750, the department said.

Nineteen states and the District of Columbia already prohibit all drivers from texting behind the wheel, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. Another 10 states restrict texting by novice drivers.

Trucking and bus industry officials said they support the texting ban.

"A lot of our members already have policies in place. It's just safe and smart," said American Bus Association President Pete Pantuso.

The prohibition doesn't apply to onboard devices that allow dispatchers to send text messages to truck drivers, but most of those devices have mechanisms that prevent their use while a truck is in motion, said Clayton Boyce, a spokesman for the American Trucking Association.

The trade association for the wireless industry, CTIA, also supports a ban on texting and e-mailing while driving, said Amy Storey, a spokeswoman for the association.

"While mobile devices are important safety tools, there's an appropriate time and an inappropriate time to use them," Storey said.

Research by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration shows that drivers who send and receive text messages take their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds out of every 6 seconds while texting, the department said. At 55 miles per hour, this means that the driver is traveling the length of a football field, including the end zones, without looking at the road, the department said.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has been campaigning against texting and cell phone use while driving. President Barack Obama signed an executive order directing federal employees not to engage in text messaging while driving government-owned vehicles or with government-owned equipment. Federal employees were required to comply with the ban starting on Dec. 30, 2009.

LaHood said enforcing restrictions on texting and cell phone use by drivers will be difficult. He urged the wireless industry to work with public officials to come up with a solution.

Everyone knows texting or talking on the phone while driving is dangerous, LaHood told reporters, but people do it anyway.

The Transportation Department and safety advocates have also joined forces to create FocusDriven, an organization to campaign against cell phone use or texting on handheld computers while driving. The organization will be modeled after Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, which has successfully lobbied for tougher drunk-driving laws.

Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Robert Menendez of New Jersey have introduced legislation to prod states to pass laws banning texting by all drivers. The bill would reduce federal highway aid by 25 percent to states that don't enact bans.

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Text messages may allow worshippers in Finland to donate money to their church without having to attend services.

Under current laws, the church cannot raise funds by texts in Finland, the home of mobile phone giant Nokia. Dean Matti Pikkarainen of Oulu Cathedral said he aimed to raise the issue at a nationwide church meeting next month.

"I've spoken this morning with some people who are in leading positions in our church to see if we can change the law," Pikkarainen said.

"It depends more on parliament than the church ... I believe the church is ready for this kind of modernization this year."

Pikkarainen said parishioners could use their phones to donate money after the end of church services, so as not to disturb other worshippers. Text messages would also give people more freedom to donate as they would not have to come to church.

"If you're listening to the service on the radio, TV or Internet, you can do it from home too. People nowadays are not always in church," he said.

At the end of 2008, about 80 percent of Finns were registered members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Oulu is in northern Finland.

After exchanging messages several times, with one thing leading to another, the two people eventually met and fell in love. Moreover, they even ended up married, going to Goa for their honeymoon.

But it's quite interesting how a mobile phone can in fact become a matchmaking tool in some cases. Sleeping Beauty -- Texting Edition

In a faraway land, a few years ago, King Stephane of New Zealand and his fair queen wished for a little girl. A year later their wish came true. They named the girl Aurora.

In honour of the birth of the princess, the king had a big party. He invited many friends to the castle. His friend King Hubert of France, brought his son, Philippe with him. Both kings agreed that one day the two children would be married.

There were many guests at the party. All of them were there to see the precious princess Aurora. Three of them were good fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. The all decided to give magical gifts to the princess.

Flora chanted, "I will wave my wand and make her a forever hottie."

"I will make her popular with her friends", said Fauna.

Merryweather's turn was next. But before she could speak, the castle doors flew open. A loud thundering noise was heard. The evil witch Maleficent appeared. She barged in and screamed "You will pay for not inviting me to the party!"She pointed to the newborn baby princess and proclaimed, "she shall die by the end of daylight on her sixteenth birthday from a prick on her finger from texting too much." With this evil spell the witch vanished.

Everyone in the room was afraid for Aurora.But Merryweather was very sly. She still had a gift to give. She tried to undo the evil spell from Maleficent. She waved her wand at the baby princess and said:

"If through the witch's trick,
Your texting finger you shall prick,
Not in death, but just in sleep,
This fateful prophecy you'll keep,
And from this ordeal you shall wake,
And there will be no mistake,
Your magic prince will bring you to life,
With a mobile text asking you to be his wife.

King Stephane was afraid for his daughter and ordered every mobile device to be destroyed. But he still feared that Maleficent would harm his daughter. The fairies told the king that they would hide her in a condo in Australia until the spell of her sixteenth birthday passed. The king and queen were sad to let their daughter go. But they both agreed that she would be safer with the fairies in Australia.

The fairies disguised Aurora to protect her identity. They called her Briar Rose. Over the years the little girl grew into a beautiful young woman. At last it was her sixteenth birthday. The fairies wanted to plan a surprise party. They sent Briar Rose to pick out a gift for herself at Future Shop. Fauna baked a chocolate cake and the other two fairies sewed her a new dress.

At the mall, Briar Rose chatted with her friends. She gossiped about a dream she had texting a mystery stranger that she would later fall in love.

A handsome young man came walking down the isle. When he saw Briar Rose chatting with her friends he jumped into a store and peeked out the glass window over women's clothing. She did not know that he was Prince Philippe of France and he did not know that she was Princess Aurora. They had been promised to marriage by their parents years before.

Back at the condo, the fairies gave Briar Rose her birthday surprise. It was a Blackberry. Then Briar Rose told them that she had fallen in love. "Impossible!" they cried. They told her the truth at last-that she was a royal princess, promised at birth to be married to a prince. Now it was time for her to return home. Maleficent's raven was perched on the window of the condo and heard everything.

The bird flew away to warn Maleficent that the princess was finally coming home to New Zealand. Maleficent had an evil plan. She decided to use her magic to rig Aurora's Blackberry. The raven would steal the Blackberry and then they would hatch their evil plan. Maleficent rushed to the castle and waited for Aurora to arrive home. She lured Aurora to the high tower by telling her that she had found her Blackberry.

In a tiny room at the high tower she slammed the door shut behind them. She told Aurora to use the Blackberry for her first time. "Touch the Blackberry!" hissed Maleficent. "Touch it, I say! I will show you how to text your love."The three good fairies rushed to the rescue, but they were too late. Aurora had touched the number 7 key on the Blackberry and instantly fallen into a deep sleep. Maleficent's curse-softened by Merryweather-had come true. Now, with a harsh laugh, the witch vanished.

The fairies cried, "Poor King Stephane and the queen." "They'll be heartbroken when they find out," said Merryweather. "They're not going to," said Flora. "We'll put then all to sleep until the princess wakes up." So the fairies waved their magic wands and put the whole town to sleep.

At the same time, the witch had captured Philippe and jailed him in her dungeon. She told him that Aurora was " in the topmost tower of King Stephane's castle." The witch told him that there was no way for Aurora to wake up from her magic spell unless she received a text message from her true love. She laughed and flew out on her broom.

When the witch was gone, the fairies suddenly appeared and handed Philippe an IPhone. They shouted, "hurry text her your true feelings!". Lying by Aurora's bed was the Blackberry that the wicked witch had lured her with. Philippe frantically started texting his love for Aurora. The Blackberry rang and rang but she could not hear from her deep sleep. Philippe kept texting different messages until he typed "I luv U my Aurora!" Then she awoke from her sleep and text him back "I luv you 2".The good fairies woke up everyone in the village. It all ended exactly the way it should-happily ever after.
